The Recipe (Takes 2 Minutes)
This is the cleaner we use in our kitchen, bathroom, and on countertops every single day. It costs roughly $0.50 per bottle to make, smells great, and works on virtually every hard surface in your home.
Ingredients
- 1 cup distilled white vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 15 drops essential oil (tea tree, lavender, or lemon — your choice)
Instructions
- Add vinegar and water to a glass or HDPE spray bottle
- Add essential oil drops
- Put the lid on and shake gently
- Label with contents and date
- Ready to use immediately — no waiting, no mixing time needed
What It Cleans (And What It Doesn’t)
Works well on: kitchen countertops, stovetops, bathroom surfaces, mirrors, windows, tile, appliance exteriors, lunch boxes, cutting boards (after washing), and most hard surfaces.
Do NOT use on: natural stone (marble, granite — vinegar etches the surface), hardwood floors, cast iron, or waxed furniture. For these surfaces, use plain castile soap diluted in water instead.
Why This Works
White vinegar is acetic acid — it’s effective at cutting through grease, dissolving mineral deposits, and killing many common bacteria including E. coli and Salmonella. Tea tree oil has antimicrobial properties and adds a pleasant fresh scent. The recipe is backed by decades of use and multiple published studies on vinegar as a household disinfectant.
Cost Comparison
- This recipe: ~$0.50 per bottle (500ml)
- Method All-Purpose Spray: ~$3.50 per bottle
- Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day: ~$4.50 per bottle
- Seventh Generation: ~$3.80 per bottle
Even compared to “natural” store-bought options, this recipe saves you 85–90% per bottle while being just as safe and effective.
Essential Oil Options & Their Benefits
- Tea tree oil — strongest antimicrobial, good for bathrooms and high-touch areas
- Lavender — gentle antimicrobial, calming scent, great for bedrooms
- Lemon — natural degreaser, fresh scent, good for kitchens
